Nakako Yokoyama began studying the violin at the age of six under the guidance of Yoko Murai and later studied with Akiko Tazawa.
In 1994, she graduated from the Faculty of Music at Toho Gakuen School of Music, and in 1997, she completed the Soloist Diploma Course at the same university. During this time, she studied under Angela Eto and Toshiya Eto.
In 1991, she won 3rd place at the 60th Japan Music Competition, and in 1992, she received an Encouragement Award at the 5th Japan International Competition. In 1994, she placed 5th at the 10th International Tchaikovsky Competition. In 1998, she gave the Japanese premiere of Furtwängler’s Violin Sonata No. 2, and the recording was delivered to his wife, Elisabeth.
From 2010 to 2012, she performed a complete recital series of Mozart’s violin sonatas. She has also performed with world-renowned violist Yuri Bashmet in programs such as NHK-FM, the Nippon Steel Promising Artist Series, and the JT Art Hall Chamber Music Series. Since 2007, she has served as a judge for the All Japan Student Music Competition, hosted by NHK and the Mainichi Shimbun.
She has released a CD under Ongaku no Tomo Sha, featuring works by Russian composers, including Prokofiev’s Violin Sonata No. 1 (with pianist Shinji Urakabe). In 2015, she released a complete set of Bach’s unaccompanied sonatas and partitas under Octavia Records.
It takes considerable effort, perseverance, and technique to be able to play an instrument exactly as you want. After understanding the style of the piece, I hope to provide advice on both technique and the mental aspects of playing, helping my students get closer to the sound they envision and the way they wish to perform.
